很明显结构性问题是至关重要的，因为香港经常刮台风，台风的破坏力是纽约或芝加哥的大风的两倍，相当于洛杉矶地震破坏力的四倍。......为了研究出中银大厦特殊的四面体堆叠的结构，贝聿铭整个周末都把自己关在卡托纳的别墅里。他拿着四个顶端削尖、剖面是三角形的棱柱反复摆弄，最后把它们并成一束，每个棱柱都向上滑出一点，高低不同，剩下一个最高的棱柱独树一帜，这样建筑的雏形就诞生了。贝聿铭将它们比作竹子，每个中国人都会理解其中的美好寓意，象征着不屈不挠的精神和顽固的新生。

整个教堂由四块弯曲的贝壳状板块组成，后面一对较高，和前面较低的一对稍稍重叠，同时充当墙壁和房顶，建筑基底为一个不规则的六边形。……为了防止混凝土结构的壳片承重不力，决定给壳片加上支撑“肋”。按照贝聿铭一直以来的指令，“不要内部设计，要诚实设计。”这些支撑肋保护在外，让人一目了然整个建筑的结构受力分布，离地面越近，压力越集中，因此肋越粗，两肋之间的菱形空隙也越小。

这些支撑肋的模型由当地的25位木匠耗时6周完成，这个精细的建筑共用了18000根波状外形的木材，按照画的地面上完整尺寸的图纸建成。
