For years I had been aware of the ugliness and the strain. We had said goodbye to skilled farm workers, been squashed down by farmgate prices, and scaled up our livestock beyond what I would once have thought possible. We knew farmers that couldn’t hold it all together and were drowning in work, and debt and chaos. It was becoming impossible to ignore the farms falling into squalor.

The economics books I read were all about how things changed for the better; they didn’t say much about the losers, the misery, and people hanging on for years, sometimes decades, because they knew nothing else. Our community was fracturing and breaking.

The logic chain is simple: we have to farm to eat, and we have to kill (or displace life, which amounts to the same things) to farm. Being human is a rough business. But there was a difference between the toughness all farming requires and the industrial ‘total war’ on nature that had been unleashed in my lifetime.

Leviticus 19:9-10

“And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest. And thou shalt not glean thy vineyard, neither shalt thou gather every grape of thy vineyard; thou shalt leave them for the poor and stranger”

My father wasn’t much of a churchgoer, but he believed in something similar. He thought that things should have limits and constraints. He believed in moderation and balance. And he died hating what had happened to farming. He had seen enough of it to know it had become a corruption of all he had loved and cared about.

We created a society obsessed with food choices and ethics, while disconnecting most people from the practical agricultural and ecological knowledge to make those choices. Now people worry about what they should eat, but have largely lost sight of how their local landscapes should be farmed and what foodstuffs they can produce sustainably. Most people are now largely illiterate when it comes to agriculture and ecology.

The economists are wrong. Farming is not a business like any other, because, crucially, it takes place in a natural setting and affects the natural world directly and profoundly. As farmers collectively made the land more efficient and sterile, whole species of birds, insects and mammals vanished and ecosystems collapsed.

A lot of people have fallen for the corporate propaganda of super-industrial farming. Particularly, its claim that it would supposedly solve all problems by sweeping away the old, less efficient farming, dialling up the intensity of the most industrial farms and somehow freeing up land to be given over to wilderness. There is a big problem in this plan. The new super-industrial farming isn’t sustainable -- it is the most destructive farming on earth in both climate and ecological terms.
