本教材根据教育部高等学校力学基础课程教学指导分委员会最新制定的“理论力学课程教学基本要求（A类）”编写，是普通高等教育“十一五”国家级规划教材和北京高等教育精品教材，也是国家精品课程的配套教材。全书共分为三篇：第一篇为运动学，包括运动学基础、刚体的平面运动、复合运动；第二篇为静力学，包括静力学基本概念、力系的简化、力系的平衡；第三篇为动力学，包括动力学基础、动能定理、动量原理(含碰撞)、达朗贝尔原理、虚位移原理、动力学普遍方程和第二类拉格朗日方程。全书共配有607道题（大部分是作者编写的新题），其中例题136道、思考题155道和习题316道。另外，还附有北京理工大学2010～2013年攻读硕士学位研究生入学考试“理论力学”试题。
