　　G. J. Meyer is a professional writer whose bylines have

appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, the

Boston Globe, Harper’s, and many other newspapers and

magazines. While working for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he was

awarded a Nieman Fellowship by Harvard University. He is the author

of two nonfiction books, The Memphis Murders, recipient of

an Edgar Award for Nonfiction, and Executive Blues. Meyer

lives in New York City.

战斗一直延续着，到了五月底，德军的弹药出现短缺，第二次伊佩尔战役终于结束了。德军伤亡四万人，英军则有六万人。“伊佩尔这个屠宰人的深坑毫无利润可赚，”邱吉尔如此称呼这次将挖地道和毒气这两种新手段引入战争的战役。引入毒气，德国人进一步损坏了自己在世界中的形象，美国人更加厌恶德国。理性看，用毒气杀人，与用子弹和刺刀刺穿人体区别不大，也与用炮弹把人炸成碎片区别不大，这些杀人办法并无道德上的差距。然而，在人类感知世界的较深层次上，人类感知到了战争又向恐怖走近了一步，这一步使人类更加野蛮。这不是人类第一次变得野蛮，也将不会是人类野蛮的最后一步，但是，德国人此时看上去最野蛮。
