As kids, all we had to do was watch them living out their dreams, filling their days with purpose and accomplishment, and know that when it was our time we could will it for ourselves.

Another sustaining lesson: hard work is everything. (Just to be clear, will can never replace hard work, but it’s a necessary spark.)

My parents are strikingly similar in that regard. They’ve grown apart, and even when they were together they seemed to be cut in different ways, but they do share an approach to life: all out, all the time. Both are incredibly ambitious, driven, competitive, confident, straightforward, loyal people. Both have an astonishingly large appetite for life. Neither one of them fit into any kind of traditional parenting role when I was a kid, and I can’t imagine either one of them being content to be at home for dinner every night at six o’clock or to spend their weekends going to soccer games or ballet recitals.

The entrepreneurial spirit was very much alive among us Trump kids, but time and circumstance invariably conspired against us.

I was a bit of a tomboy, which played into one of our most successful money-making schemes; you wouldn’t have guessed it by looking at me, because my mother used to dress me in frills and lace and all the latest fashions, but underneath I had a pretty rambunctious spirit. There was definitely some duality to my persona, despite my perfect little-lady appearance.

It was time well spent, though, because it taught me a valuable lesson: just because the other girls enjoyed something didn’t mean I had to, too. I could still dress like a girl, act like a girl, and certainly look like a girl, but I had to be true to what actually interested me, not to what was supposed to interest me. I was never going to be happy living up to someone else’s expectations.
